Old Soul Kpop: Brown Eyes

Today was a rainy, cold dreary day and I was in the mood for some smooth sounds. I wandered around youtube and thankfully stumbled across an old kpop duo named Brown Eyes. They came out in the early 2000s releasing 4 albums. The albums were mostly R&B ballads and from what I’ve heard so far, these guys were amazing. They never went on music shows or really did any type of promotions. They actually turned down some awards because they wanted to keep the focus on their music and not on them. Their last album was released back in 2008 and  have since gone their separate ways. There are a few songs and m/v’s on youtube but this song I’ve had on repeat all afternoon. Grab a glass of wine, light some candles and enjoy!

Sexy Oppa: Andy Lau

Andy Lau is Chinese, I know, but sexy gege just doesn’t sound right to me. I recently saw Andy Lau in the movie Shaolin. I’ve seen him in a few films before but watching him do kung-fu alongside Jackie Chan… let’s just say it piqued my interest. Can you believe this man is 50? I might have to amend my earlier statement about the fountain of youth being in Korea. Maybe it’s just the water in Asian countries in general because wow.

Andy Lau has been acting since the 80s.He first started doing Chinese dramas and variety shows before starting his musical career. It took a while for his musical career to take off but by the time the 90s rolled around, he was considered one of the “Cantopop Four Heavenly Kings”.  He does have a few scandals (and who wouldn’t with over two decades in the spotlight). The first was, in my mind, not a scandal at all. He kept his marriage a secret for a while. The reasons vary but from what I gather, it was because his fans demanded that he stayed single, for them. Yes he is fine and all but please, let him have a personal life. He and his wife are currently expecting their first child. The second scandal was pretty bad. Apparently he had a fan whose family sold all of their belongings to go to Hong Kong to meet him. They did but it wasn’t what they expected and the father of the fan ended up killing himself. Truly sad.

Here is a list of his many movies that are available on Netflix. I won’t kill you (or myself) by writing them all out, just check out the list and enjoy.

Sexy Oppa: Cha Seung Won

Okay, I think it’s time for me to move to Korea and start drinking their water. Why? Because everyone there must be drinking from the fountain of youth, including this man.  Cha Seung Won is one of the few Korean men that have facial hair, and I actually like it.  The first time I saw him was in the kdrama City Hall.  The show was meh, but I absolutely loved him in it.  Apparently he’s had a lot of comedic rolls (like in the Greatest Love) but I can only see him action/angsty rolls like “Athena” or “Eye for an Eye”. Also can I mention that he stars in “71: Into the Fire” with TOP? Always a plus. Besides dramas and movies, he’s been in a few music videos. Most recently he was the brooding ajussi/bounty hunter in T-ara’s  music video for “Cry, Cry”. Very sexy but very long since the video was 15 minutes.

Cha Seung Won is also a family man. He married his wife when he was 18 and they are still happily together. They have a son who is 23 and a daughter who’s 8.  I know I’d be one smiling lady, if I were his wife. His son is handsome as well and his daughter is too cute! Here is a list of some of his movies and dramas if you are interested in watching.

Secret

Murder, Take One

Athena: Goddess of War

City Hall

Greatest Love

Sexy Oppa: Lee Byung Hun

I love all my kpop idols, believe me I do. There are times, however, where I feel like a pedo nuna because most of them are at least four years younger than me. I’m sure I’m not the only one that thinks this way so I thought I’d show off some of our oppas. The first person I thought of was Lee Byung Hun. This man is perfection personified and I’m not just being a fan girl when I say that. I first saw him in my favorite drama, IRIS, and I remember sitting up thinking, “Damn, who is that?!?” I cannot believe he is 41 and looks like this.

If Korean dramas aren’t your thing, he also played Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe and will be resurrecting the role in G.I. Joe 2, coming out this summer.  He’s done a ton of CFs and even released an album. As far as I could find he’s never been married and he doesn’t have any children but I’m sure he won’t be single for long unless he wants to be because damn, lol.

Here is a list of movies/tv shows he’s been in, if you’re interested in seeing more of him.

IRIS

I Saw The Devil

The Good, The Bad, and The Weird

Three Extremes

All In

GI Joe

JYP Responds to Tweets

Wondering what that sound was last night? It was me, fan girl screaming, because I had just gotten a reply tweet from JYP. That’s right, Park Jin-young, CEO of JYP Entertainment and producer of Wondergirls and 2pm/2am among others (including discovering a certain person who we are all biased to) took the time out of his unbelievably busy day to respond to me. JYP!

Homegrown Hottie: Eli Kim

Kim Kyoung-Jae or Ellison Kim, commonly known as Eli is our next homegrown hottie. Eli is part of U-Kiss which is the same group that is home to fellow homegrown hottie Kevin Woo. Eli was born in LA but raised in Virginia. He dropped out of high school and travelled to Beijing to further his studies. He also learned some Mandarin while he was there. Eli debuted with the U-kiss in 2008 as their main rapper.

In addition to being in U-Kiss, Eli starred in the Thai drama Autumn Destiny, alongside Kibum who is an ex member of U-Kiss. I don’t know much about the show other then the fact that Eli and Kibum had their parts dubbed because they don’t speak the language. Eli also has the nickname pigeon because of his awesome imitation of a bird and I mean a really awesome imitation of it. You can check it out here.

I hate the fact that there are so many conflicting stories out on the internet about the idols I write about. That’s the main reason why the homegrown hotties posts are rather short. It isn’t because I don’t like them, I absolutely love them. I just hate to write something that isn’t true. Perhaps once I finish learning how to read and understand Korean, I’ll have better luck. In the mean time, enjoy the pics of Eli. I know I will 🙂

[M/V] Son Ho Young – Pretty But Hateful

I came across Son Ho Young by way of someone’s playlist on iTunes. I was in another room and by the time the preview had reached 30 seconds, I was ready to buy his mini album. Son Ho Young was part of the idol group g.o.d, who were extremely popular in the late 90s early 2000s. He’s been doing his solo act since 2006 but this is his first release in about three years. U-Turn only has about five songs including the obligatory instrumental but if his full album is as good as the songs I’ve heard so far, Son Ho Young will have definitely have many new fans in the New Year. He also gets extra points for being from Jersey and for being a total hottie.

Homegrown Hottie: Kevin Woo

Our next homegrown hottie is Kevin Woo from U-Kiss. Kevin was born in San Fransico, California and lived there until he was 15 before moving to Seoul to pursue his dream of becoming a singer. He debuted with a group named Xing in 2006 along side Kim Kibum. Kevin stayed with Xing until 2008, when he joined U-Kiss. I’ve been reading a lot about Kevin recently and have come to the conclusion that he is one of the sweetest, most adorable guys out there. He hasn’t been in any scandals and seems to be very respectful to the Korean culture despite being born and raised in America. He’s really active on his twitter account and always seems to be upbeat. I just want to shrink him down so I can stick him on my key chain! Does that sound creepy? I don’t care because he is so adorable!

Speaking of (slightly) creepy, I found a picture of Kevin dressed as a woman for an episode as Star King. He really looks…pretty. The video is hysterical though so if you have time, check it out here.

Homegrown Hottie: Jay Park

I talked about homegrown hotties in my last post on the SME Global Auditions. The men were ultra sexy and deserve to have the spotlight shined on them, individually. The first homegrown hottie is none other than Jay Park. Jay, who was born and raised in Washington State, showed an early interest in the hip-hop culture, specifically b-boying. For those who don’t know, a b-boy is someone who break-dances. He auditioned for JYP when he was 17 and was brought to Korea to undergo what I like to call “Idol Training”. Idol Training is for all budding kpop artist. They undergo months, if not years of dance and singing lessons. Since Jay was a Korean-American, he also had to receive Korean language and cultural lessons.

In 2008, 2PM debut with Jay Park as their leader and quickly rose to fame.
Jay would eventually have to withdraw from 2PM due to some controversial comments against Korea he posted on his Myspace page. I personally think the netizens blew it out of proportion. How would they feel if they had to leave their home and live a new country where they didn’t know the language or have any friends. JYP released him from his contract and he returned to the States. He made his comeback through Youtube by posting videos of himself break dancing and singing. In 2010 he returned to Korea and in April of 2011, he released a mini-album as a solo artist. He plans on releasing a full length album in January 2012. As you can see from the pictures, Jay Park looks good in and out of clothes but good grief, please raise your hand if you want to see more pictures with him shirt-less. 🙂
