Junsu: Send Happy Thoughts His Way

Isnt it funny how we were just talking about 2PM’s Junsu? He was the BKM Hottie this week after all ^_^ I even added that he had knee surgery and was hanging out in a hospital room. Who knew that such tragedy was about to take place.

Today Junsu’s appa passed away and it makes me really sad.

I don’t know what their relationship was like so I can’t sit here and say I know exactly how he’s feeling. True, I know what its like to lose my father and for me it was a pain that I should not have had to experience at such a young age ( I was 10 ). I’m sure his knee doesn’t hurt at the moment because the pain he’s feeling is else where; but I have to be honest and say this sad news hurts me.

Junsu is my 2PM bias and I know what its like to lose a parent. The combination of my adoration for him as a person and the all to familiarity with death makes me want to reach out and send as many prayers, happy thoughts and best wishes to him and his family as I can possibly create…To all the readers send happy thoughts his way ok?

Junsu, FIGHTING!!

K-Kisses KrisE!

Nichkhun Plugs “The Help”

Just another reason why he is one of my favourite people in K-pop! Today, 2PM’s Nichkhun carried on a brief Twitter conversation about race and discrimination with his friend @peach_pachara, and ended with suggesting that he watch “The Help”, a 2011 film depicting life for 2 African-American maids who serve white employers during the U.S. Civil Rights era. See below.

I am ashamed to say that I haven’t seen this movie yet. I simply haven’t had the time to go to the theatre, but I’m going to take Khunnie’s suggestion and see it ASAP. I’ve heard rave reviews about it from just about everyone who’s seen it, so no more excuses boab81!

Date Week with 2PM!

Ahhh, 2PM. My favourite K-pop boyband. The beastly boys with the good looks, masculine style and energetic dance choreography. Not only do I really appreciate their image, but I also really enjoy their music (namely their “1:59” and “Hottest Time of the Day” albums), which reminds me of the Miami bass music I listened to growing up in the 90s. When JYP created 2PM, he knew exactly what he was doing. He wasn’t going for the sweet, sometimes syrupy image synonymous with most SM acts, or even the alternative, eclectic image of YG’s most popular groups. No, he was intent on creating a boyband with the perfect balance between Korean pretty-boy and U.S. urban bad boy. 2PM: a boyband after my own heart. So, without further ado, read on to find out how I’d spend a date with each member…

Monday – Wooyoung
Wooyoung is a trip. I consider him the comic relief of the group and I’d love to see him do standup at a comedy club. He is also 2PM’s aegyo king. No one in the group can top his killing aegyo! I’m sure by the time my date ended with Wooyoung, my sides will be completely split from laughing so much and so hard. Good times!

Tuesday – Taecyeon
Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the beastliest member of them all? Ok Taecyeon! Taec takes care of his bod and it shows. For a date, I’d like to go to the gym with him and experience a one-on-one wrestling match. I have a feeling the date may end early as his phone will continually be blowing up with texts and calls from SNSD members. Not a nice way to treat your noona-date, Taec!

Wednesday – Chansung
Sometimes Chansung seems to zone out to another dimension, so I probably wouldn’t make a lot of effort to dig into his personality. I get the feeling he likes Sci-fi movies, so we’d go check out a weird flick at the nearest movie theatre and finish up the date by playing in the adjacent arcade for a little while. This guy is also known for having a healthy appetite. We’d go to one of those all you can eat buffets and tear it up. I believe the way to Chansung’s heart is truly through his stomach.

Thursday – Junho
Junho’s an amazing dancer and I would love for him to show me how to do some of his best dance moves. Part of his appeal is that he is very serious about his career and is a very hard worker, and I believe that dedication also comes through when he’s in a relationship. I’d like to experience what it’s like to get his full attention for a day. I don’t think I’d be disappointed 

Friday – Junsu
Chilling with our favourite “round-the-way” boy would be the best way to end a hectic work week. Junsu’s got incredible personal style and carries himself in such a way that reminds me more of a sweet-natured U.S. urban boy-next-door than a stereotypical shy Asian guy. He’s a stellar singer and song-writer and I would want to spend some time listening to his musical compositions with him. Afterwards a walk down to the local, trendy ramen shop would be the perfect way to end the date. Ramen noodles with Junsu: best Friday I’ve had in a long time!

Saturday & Sunday – Nichkhun
Ah Nichkhun! Mr: Never-disrespectful-cuz-his-mama-taught-him-that!” *Sigh* and so the weekend belongs to Khunnie. He is my ultimate 2PM bias because he is a gentlemen and obviously had very good home-training. Kudos to his parents for raising such a well-mannered young man. Of course I am in complete denial if I hear anything negative about this guy. What I really like about him is that no matter if you’re someone he has feelings for or not, he’ll still treat you like a lady, which gets him into trouble often. But I can’t be mad at him. A full Saturday would be spent at a theme park with lots of roller coasters and cotton candy. Sunday would be spent watching award-winning foreign films one after the other, only taking breaks to eat by ordering takeout or rustling something up in the kitchen. No cell phones allowed! Complete quiet time with Khunnie. My year is made! ^^

How would you spend a date with each member?

Homegrown Hottie: Jay Park

I talked about homegrown hotties in my last post on the SME Global Auditions. The men were ultra sexy and deserve to have the spotlight shined on them, individually. The first homegrown hottie is none other than Jay Park. Jay, who was born and raised in Washington State, showed an early interest in the hip-hop culture, specifically b-boying. For those who don’t know, a b-boy is someone who break-dances. He auditioned for JYP when he was 17 and was brought to Korea to undergo what I like to call “Idol Training”. Idol Training is for all budding kpop artist. They undergo months, if not years of dance and singing lessons. Since Jay was a Korean-American, he also had to receive Korean language and cultural lessons.

In 2008, 2PM debut with Jay Park as their leader and quickly rose to fame.
Jay would eventually have to withdraw from 2PM due to some controversial comments against Korea he posted on his Myspace page. I personally think the netizens blew it out of proportion. How would they feel if they had to leave their home and live a new country where they didn’t know the language or have any friends. JYP released him from his contract and he returned to the States. He made his comeback through Youtube by posting videos of himself break dancing and singing. In 2010 he returned to Korea and in April of 2011, he released a mini-album as a solo artist. He plans on releasing a full length album in January 2012. As you can see from the pictures, Jay Park looks good in and out of clothes but good grief, please raise your hand if you want to see more pictures with him shirt-less. 🙂

SM Entertainment’s Global Auditions: Are You The Next Idol?

I would like to thank allkpop for bringing this to my attention. SM Entertainment, home of SHINee, TVXQ, and Super Junior, are holding auditions worldwide, looking for their next idol. The auditions start January 7th, 2012 in Korea and make stops in China, Japan, Canada and the United States. I am extremely interested in the States auditions. They start February 18th in New York and then moves to Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles.  The process itself seems pretty simple. If you are auditioning to be a singer, you will be required to sing acapella for up to two minutes. If you want to become a dancer, then be prepared to do a freestyle dance to music SM will provide. If acting is your thing, prepare a monologue that showcases your skills. If you are interested in auditioning but can’t make it to the in-person auditions, you can also apply through email and youtube.

SM stresses that all are welcome to audition regardless of ethnicity or race. While I am pleased they are giving this opportunity to people who live outside of Korea, I wonder if everyone really have a chance at becoming a star in Korea. I’m sure you’ll have to learn the Korean language if chosen by SM for training. The incident with Jay Park when he was debuting with 2pm under JYP is an example of how isolated and alone a person might feel when first living in Korea.

I don’t want to discourage anyone from auditioning though. Henry from Super Junior-M and Eli Woo from U-kiss are North American born and are very successful kpop idols.  I plan on keeping a close eye on the audition process. Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to see the first woman of color become a famous kpop star or costarring  with Lee Min Ho in a future drama.

For more information on the auditions, click here.

Also for those who are interested here is a list of current kpop members that are not originally from Korea (aka “Homegrown Hotties”).

Jay Park – United States
Taecyeon from 2pm – United States
Eli from U-kiss – United States
Kevin from U-kiss – United States
Zhou Mi from Super Junior M – China
Kevin from ZE:A – Australia

Ok Taecyeon: The Ultimate Embodiment of Sexy/Goofy

22-year-old 2PM rapper Ok Taecyeon is super-model gorgeous, and he was originally picked up by JYP for that very purpose until the popular entertainment company realized he was much more than just a pretty face. Before we discuss his talent, let’s not get off the subject of his physical assets. Standing at 6’1″ tall, chiseled facial features and the body of a greek god, it would be hard to ignore someone like him in public (trust me, I know!) He’s stunning. Nuff said about that. Now that we’ve gotten his hotness out of the way…he’s one of two rappers in 2PM, and known for having a deep, husky voice and being the most “beastly” member of the 6-member boyband.

Born in South Korea, but having lived in Boston, MA from a young age, “Taec”, as he is affectionately called by his friends and fans, is quite simply, a goofball. Who woulda thunk it? If any of you have ever had the pleasure of watching any of the Idol Army shows featuring 2PM, you’ll notice that Taec is often the instigator and perpetrator of pranks and goofs and he is also known for having a “unique” fashion sense. Ok, let’s be honest. His fashion sense sucks. Unless you think monotone outfits (from head to toe) are fashionable. I happen to not think that. It is also known that Taec has horrible eyesight and may not be able to serve 2-year mandatory military service if it is not corrected. But hey, nobody’s perfect, right?

Heaven On a Sunday: Backstage at the 10/9 K-Pop Concert in NY

Receiving a glance from SHINee’s Minho, witnessing an impromptu DBSK rehearsal, seeing Bi’s “teddy bear”-hyung in the flesh, and observing 2PM pre-performance. Now before I go any further by leading you all to believe that I was actually able to speak/interact with these guys, please understand, that is not the case. Unfortunately, forbiddance to engage or heckle them with questions was the condition of getting the backstage pass (more or less), so I was the ever observant by-stander, doing my best to hold in the fangirl when I saw these guys in person, mere feet and inches away. I had to play the professional, and because my goal is to become a regular at such events, it is in my best interest to play by the rules. The first thing I noticed when I went backstage was that I was the only non-Korean person there. So I know that I stuck out like a sore thumb. I got inquisitive looks from some staff members and kind acknowledgement from others. Nonetheless, I braved on in hopes that I would get to see my favourite acts in their backstage activities. And boy oh boy, lemme tell ya, I did…

A Glance From SHINee Minho
I was chatting with security and KBS staff when a big red chartered bus drove up to the backstage entrance. I noticed a few male shadowy figures in the bus waiting to step off. I thought that it may be 2PM, SHINee or Beast. I nonchalantly turned to face them as they started to step off of the bus. I realized that it was indeed SHINee with a platinum-blonde Key and a staff member slowly walking toward and eventually past me.

SHINEE: (from left to right) Onew, Taemin, Jonghyun, Minho, Key

You can probably imagine how I must have felt seeing them so close, but once again, I had to contain my excitement. So I watched them walk past…each seemingly in his own world: Jonghyun (hands jammed deep in jean pockets and head down in what seemed to be self-loathing), the ever slender, ever adorable Taemin (whose eyes were covered in shades), tall, sexy Minho (who acknowledged my presence with a sidelong glance right in my eyes) and Onew, who finished up the line looking rather tall, lean and fine himself. They were moving terribly slow, no doubt road-weary and lacking sufficient sleep and rest. They dragged up the stairs to the stage from the back, and when I heard the screams from the gathering crowd in the front of the stage, I figured they’d made their arrival known. I watched SHINee rehearse for a few songs, but by the time they were done, I could no longer find them. I supposed they had left the stage in a flash and retreated to their dressing trailer.

Witnessing an Impromptu DBSK Rehearsal
DBSK, dressed in black and looking sharp, arrived shortly after SHINee. I was kneeling down rummaging through my backpack when Yunho nearly knocked me over as he bolted by with a female staff member. Changmin followed soon after, looking just as pretty as his pictures. They didn’t snail as SHINee had. They rushed in, quickly to their rehearsal and also seemed to disappear into their trailer for hours until the concert started.

DBSK: (from left to right) Changmin, Yunho

I saw DBSK about 3 ½ hours later. It was dark by then, and I was chatting with a young man who was interning for the production company and helping out with the sound equipment. I heard some commotion RIGHT BEHIND ME, and when I turned around, Changmin and a male dancer, were rehearsing some moves from “Keep Your Head Down”. Yunho, with some other staff members, seemed to be in deep thought about something and was resting in the very chair that I sat in 20 minutes earlier. If only I hadn’t moved! If only I were more patient and stayed put! I wonder if he would’ve sat next to me. My breath caught in my throat, because I was so close to them. But once again, I just turned around and pretended not to see them. Talk about frustration! The guys were very cool and seemed unbothered by the noise and chaos around them. I never was able to make any eye contact with either of them, but just being that close was enough to make me smile.

Kim Tae Woo Really Is A Big Teddy Bear!
After my first DBSK sighting, I didn’t think I’d see anyone else that I wanted to so quickly. Boy was I wrong! A very tall, well-dressed and smiling young man began walking from the stage right as DBSK went in, and I immediately recognized him as Kim Tae Woo. He’d just finished rehearsal and was leaving. I knew Tae Woo ssi was tall, but when I saw him in person I was stunned! He looked nearly 6’2” or 6’3” as he walked by me, also with a female staff member. I nodded politely to him and he returned the gesture, got in a chartered van and took off.

Former G.O.D. member Kim Tae Woo

This was rehearsal, but he would show up later for the actual show (and blow the audience away with his amazing vocals!). I always think of Tae Woo ssi as the hyung that took care of a starving, young Bi in his pre-debut days. Bi has called Tae Woo ssi his “brother” and “big teddy bear” on several occasions. Isn’t Bi’s approval enough for us? On top of that, to read his interviews is to get the sense of a really honest and kind person. I was very pleased to see him.

A Fashionably Late 2PM Finally Arrives!
2PM showed up last. I believe they were on a delayed flight from Japan hot off the tail of a show in Taipei (props for your stamina, guys!). Anyway, around that same time I was chatting with the young sound equipment intern and we were looking over the set list. The intern remarked that he’d heard 2PM wasn’t coming. Needless to say, his remark disappointed me. But within seconds of his saying it, I looked over my shoulder and immediately recognized Wooyoung, in a bright red military jacket, followed by Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Junsu, Junho and Chansung! 2PM came and huddled about 8 feet from me, and I allowed the fangirl in me to begin filming them with my small camera. One of their female staff members spotted me and tried to block my view with her body. Grrr! Junho caught me too, and looked right at me! He didn’t seem too pleased, but then again, who knows what he was thinking? Maybe he was nervous. Maybe he had indigestion. Maybe he was tired and wanted to sleep. Or maybe I really was getting on his nerves (^^).

2PM: (from left to right) Chansung, Wooyoung, Nickhun, Junho, Taecyeon, Junsu

Nichkhun also looked at me, probably curious or suspicious of just exactly how I fit in. I put the camera away and went back into professional mode. Now, remember that seating area I mentioned DBSK was using? Well, I should’ve never left it, because 2PM used it to rest for a few minutes and greet other performers as well. As I was trying to ignore them, the intern guy next to me said “hello” to someone, and I realized it was Wooyoung, who walked right behind me to get to a back table. Nichkhun was wearing a sleeveless, silver-studded top with black pants, and I noticed him doing some pull-ups on the bars used to construct the stage. He totally busted me watching him. That was my second eye contact with him. And both times I’m sure I totally came off as the stalker. Sheesh, gotta work on that! 2PM eventually spent the next 10 minutes with their staff behind the stage and finally went up and performed “Hands Up” and “10 Out of 10” to a screaming crowd.

My experience was so surreal. I was in the presence of people that I had seen only in videos and pictures. Not only that, but it seems as though South Korea, which is where they’re based, is a world away. So honestly, I never thought I would get to see them in person. Life has a funny way of presenting opportunities, doesn’t it? It wasn’t the easiest thing for me to get up to New Jersey, but because of the potentiality, how could I not go? I really surprised myself at how well I was able to contain my joy when seeing and being so close to them.

What a day
This is where my journey ends. After 2PM and DBSK performed, I left as quickly as I could so as not to miss my flight back to my home state. As I am writing this, I still can’t believe what happened. I still can’t believe I saw SHINee, 2PM, DBSK and Kim Tae Woo in the flesh, and so close. Wow. I do believe my year is made. ^^
