I have nothing against Asian men of other nationalities. I truly love and am open to all of them. As a matter of fact, color, nationality and ethnicity do not matter to me when it comes to finding true love. I am an equal opportunity woman that will give any genuine guy a chance that is truly interested in knowing and loving me. That said, and since this is an Asian men appreciation blog, Asian men are the focus of this post. You may be wondering why I’m defending myself as if I am up on the witness stand. 🙂
A few days ago, I came across this video on youtube, and was really moved by this young man’s concerns, as they are valid concerns. Kon, a young Thai man, finds annoyance in the fact that in the majority of the AM/BW online communities he frequents, black women seem to only mention Korean, Japanese and Chinese men as the Asian nationalities of their choice in men, omitting all Asian men of other nationalities.
I do believe that most black women in general do not have an abundance of Asian men in their everyday surroundings, and if they do, there is still an invisible divide, that is keeping them from connecting. This can be very frustrating for both black women and Asian men, who are interested in each other, and so the first thing each party may do is try to use the internet to find black women and Asian men that they can connect with. Let’s keep it real, and let’s take Korean men for example.
K-Pop alone is all over the internet…Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Its so easy to find pictures, bios, videos, etc. on the Jung Jihoons, G-Dragons, Kim Hyun Joongs and Super Juniors of the world that way. With the influx and ease of accessibility of Korean dramas, movies and music, is it no wonder that Korean men get most of our attention?
South Korea has really stepped up and decided that they want to show the world what they’re workin’ with, and boy they have! But should guys like Kon, or Asian guys of other nationalities feel annoyed or threatened with all the attention that K-Pop and Korean men have been getting from black women? I personally don’t think so. A man is a man, no matter what color or nationality he is. It’s not that we don’t love all of you Asian guys, it’s just that we’re giving attention to what’s smack-dab in front of us.
I will add that it isn’t just because K-pop is easily accessible that it has garnered our attention. K-pop is, as one of BWLB’s avid contributors has said before, “a well-oiled machine” and gives fans, no matter what their color, so much more than what they could possibly ask for. That said, I do believe that the blog should be more diverse in its coverage of Asian men of other nationalities. It is quite the challenge, but I will do my best to bring more diversity. I want to thank Kon for bringing up this subject and I look forward to what you all have to say in this regard.

I saw his video ages ago! I was like, OMG, he’s right! I hear it all the time -that the women who are interested in Asian men want a certain type of Asian and how much it sucks for men that may be interested, but don’t fit the target.
And you do have a point. Korea is inescapable right now -just everywhere- while other countries are not quite as open and visible. I guess in the end, the Asian men who want to be noticed need to step up the visibility and put themselves out there a little more. Though, it’s easier said than done in this internet age where privacy is such a concern and stalking (and other nasties) are so prevalent.
I remener this.vid too. But.i.agreethat if.a.certain.natoonality wants.to noticed its easier said than done. But im sure all and hope all nationalites get noticed.

Hmm ok interesting point of view “Kon” has. Now a lot of you are probably going to disagree with me and that’s fine, go for it. I would completely understand his point of view if Thailand was all up in our faces and we acted like they didn’t exist but news flash they’re not. In fact all I personally know about Thailand is they have good food and the Crown Prince in Goong went there; end of my Thai knowledge. You cant be interested in something if you don’t even know it exists. It really comes down to just that. I think Kon needs to sit back and re-evaluate his concerns. Korean, Chinese and Japanese people have done many things to make their presence in Western society known. It’s normal for any woman not just a black woman to use them as reference points. Just because they are a reference point doesn’t mean they prefer one Asian over another. However on the flip side theres nothing wrong if a woman does prefer one over the other. Who is he to say black women should like ALL Asian men? Discrimination is natural people participate in it every day and I happen to think it’s a good thing when it comes to choosing a future partner.

I have to agree with you on that KrisE. When I first realized I had “Yellow Fever,” the only Asian ethnic group I knew and saw was Chinese. So, naturally, when it came to other Asian nationalities, I’d get a bit confused, and subconsciously use Chinese as a reference point. I was talking to my mother recently about how all most Asian people (abroad) only know of Black people from television. She brought up when my little cousin (he was maybe 6 or 7 at the time) had a crush on some little girl he met. I distinctly remember him saying “She’s Chinese and White!” Now, if our children know of Asian people enough to act normal around them, you wonder why children in Asian countries don’t have the same type of exposure. But the media is a monster lol.
Now, as a young adult, I accept guys of all Asian ethnic groups, but I tend to feel more comfortable around Chinese and Japanese, because I’m sort of aware of their culture and I can speak a little of their languages, unlike Thai and Laos guys, for example. I used to feel bad for Kon whenever I watched this video, but it seems like he needs to re-evaulate his perception of the whole thing. I mean, I’m human, I WILL be biased, because I’m not perfect. He needs to understand that about all of us.

@KrisE: that is so true…I feel a little guilty, but at the same time what can possibly be done?? I scour the internet repeatedly to try to find info on other nationalities but it is scarce. When choosing a life partner, it doesn’t matter to me either way, but when trying to find content for my blog, it’s quite different
It’s actually kinda nice to hear that angle. Personally, I’m not picky, but I think we tend to see what’s thrown out in front of us and typically, the media that reaches us, Asian-wise, is Japanese, Korean, or Chinese. Even more than that, I feel like a lot of us aren’t even certain of our standing in the eyes of people from Asia so the last thing we tend to think is that any of them would care enough to actually be offended that black women are less interested in their country. A lot of us are more worried that they might be less interested in our entire race. Before seeing this blog, I had a pretty negative outlook on the possibility of success in dating anyone Asian simply because I figured any of their attempts to date outside their race would be anything but black. Really though, the neglect is so not intentional. It’s not so much a lack of interest as it is just not having as much of those influences around. They should definitely step up and say what they feel because we won’t know otherwise.
@PB13: it is all about influences and what we’ve been exposed to. Although we are still taking a step outside of that realm of Western media and seeking out Asian men, the only ones that are highly visible are Korean, Japanese and Chinese…

This was a really interesting post. I have to agree with what BOAB and KrisE wrote. The Hallyu wave has been hitting the States hard while other (and probably lesser known) countries have been hiding. Perhaps if they were a bit more out there, we as BW would recognize them more. As far as Thai men, I do know of a FINE man in the movie”The Man From Nowhere”. His name is Thanayong Wongtrakul and he was the assassin/bodyguard for the bad guys. I’m not sure what his name is in the movie but when I first saw him on the screen…woah! *fans self* I did a search and unfortunately couldn’t find anything about him other then the fact that he was in this movie and one prior to it. Which brings us right back to the problem about other Asian men being lesser known to BW. Here’s to hoping with the Hallyu wave doing so well, other countries will get in on the action and bring us more delicious eye candy. If you know TOP you know he is never ever nekkid. They say the character he will be playing, a remake of Absolute Boyfriend, is always shirtless. I feel he will find some way around it. I think since he lost a lot of weight he is very self conscience of his body. The group members say he has a great one, but I don’t think he agrees.

If I were in Kon shoes, I would find it equally as annoying..and insulting . I’m not an Asian or male,but I just could imagine some woman being enthralled by him,then they go on talking about K-pop..Korea or just telling him…as he mentioned on his clip…the kind of Korean man they want when he’s actually of Thai descent.
I’ve always been into all races of men since I could remember. Far as Asian men, it was the same thing long before K-pop came into the scene. Now I will admit this..I did have my picks. I was attracted to Asian men,but if you were especially from Japan, India or Indonesia.they had me the most,but I’ve had to learn a valuable lesson from a guy I dated to remind me to appreciate people no matter where they came from. That was many moons ago ,I was young with no concrete thoughts of what counted in people Since then, I ‘ve been open minded to all Asian men.

It’s true we’ve only been really exposed to Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. As I grew up I was exposed to Filipino too. Recently Taiwanese because if those tasty drinks called boba and tdramas I’ve seen. Then Vietnamese because of my sister’s friends are. Well like he said Asia is pretty big though,so there’s more Asian races out there. Whatever your attracted to is what you’ll like though.
